What This Service Is Not

To set clear expectations: homemaking is light housekeeping, not a deep-cleaning or restoration service. Our PSW homemakers do not provide deep cleaning, move-out or move-in cleaning, carpet shampooing, window washing, yard work, or any heavy lifting. We don't clean up after large renovations or handle major hoarding situations.

If your parent's home needs that kind of intensive work, a commercial cleaning company is the right fit for the one-time job — and our PSW can maintain the home with regular light housekeeping afterward. Being honest about scope is part of how we work.

Senior housekeeping support tends to come up at a few common turning points. An aging parent living alone often can't keep up with the house — tasks that were once routine, like vacuuming, laundry, and scrubbing the bathroom, become physically harder or simply get forgotten. Regular visits keep the home manageable and safe.

A spouse who used to do everything may suddenly not be able to. When the partner who ran the household becomes ill or passes away, the surviving spouse is often left managing tasks they've never done, and a PSW homemaker eases that burden. The same is true after hospital discharge, when household routines lapsed — recovery takes energy, and keeping up with cleaning and meals is the last thing your parent should be worrying about.

Homemaking also brings peace of mind to adult children at a distance who want their parent's home maintained. If you live in another city or province, knowing that someone reliable is checking in and keeping the home in good shape makes a real difference.

A general cleaning crew shows up, cleans, and leaves — and you often get a different person each visit. A PSW homemaker builds a relationship with your parent. They learn where things go, they notice when something has changed — a new bruise, less food in the fridge, increasing confusion — and they can quietly raise the flag with you before a small problem becomes an emergency.

Because PSWs are trained to work around vulnerable adults, they bring a level of care and awareness a standard cleaner doesn't. And if your parent's needs grow, the same caregiver can step into personal care or companion care without you having to start over with a new provider. That continuity is the real advantage.

The quality of any in-home service comes down to who walks through the door. Every PSW on our roster has completed college-level PSW training (following the Ontario PSW Program Standard delivered through Ontario's career and community colleges), passed a Vulnerable Sector police check, holds current First Aid and CPR certification, and is matched to your family based on personality and communication style. Personal Support Workers are not regulated in most Canadian provinces, which is why our internal vetting standards matter — the bar is whatever the agency chooses to set.

S Care Companion carries general liability insurance covering all placements, and is WSIB-compliant.

When someone is working in your parent's home around their belongings and their wellbeing, that coverage isn't a detail — it's a baseline. S Care Companion is a PSW-only agency. We do not employ or place registered nurses, RPNs, LPNs, or any other regulated health professionals.

Private homemaking and light housekeeping in the GTA typically runs $25 to $35 per hour CAD as a market estimate (not S Care's published rate). Homemaking sits at the lower tier of in-home support, alongside companionship.
